FIAT LUX: 4th Annual National Juried Exhibition

Latin for "Let There Be Light". How is the idea of ‘light’ manifested in contemporary jewellery designs? Are they inspired by a spiritual path? A particularly beautiful stone? Or has social conscience been the guide? Come and see the answers!

Jewellery artists from across the country submitted nearly 40 works out of which only 22 pieces were selected by our panel of jurors. Awards were granted in the following categories: Best in Show, Best Use of Gemstones, Best Interpretation of the Theme and 2 Honorable Mentions.

SAVED FROM OBLIVION: Solo Exhibition by Sonja Neven

The practice of recycling inherited jewellery has been a standard procedure throughout history. For this artist the sentimental preservation of history exists alongside the desire to express individuality.

Sonja Neven started her career in 1978 as the youngest marketing member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council.  Originally working with textiles she became interested in metals after moving to Alberta in 1993.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Jewellery and Metals Program at the Alberta College of Art & Design in 2004. Sonja has earned the respect of her colleagues for her unique style and vision.  Her work has been exhibited and added to collections across Europe, the United States and Japan. The artist's success comes from her continuing commitment to the learning and love of her chosen field. She lives in Cochrane, Alberta with her family where she maintains an independent studio practice.

GLOSS: Solo Exhibition by Devon Clark

Inspired by the Art Deco period, designs are realized using precious stones and metals. Enamel is layered in color & texture to create a tangle of patterns over silhouetted metal surfaces. The results are a luscious and glossy series of personal decoration and ornament.

This body of work marks the beginning of a new era for the artist. Birthed from circumstance, the inspiration for this collection arose from having to work within external parameters which imposed limitations on the creative process. Motherhood and the rising costs for materials in an unstable economy have been major factors in the creation of this collection. However, within her limitations, Clark has found creative expansion and expression.

Devon Clark currently works out of her studio in Calgary and is a co-founder of INFLUX Jewellery Gallery. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2002.
