Artist’s Statement
I have been developing my particular, peculiar craft for the last seven years. An avid interest and training in both science and art has driven me to create beautifully crafted sterling silver and resin jewellery with intriguing inclusions: real insects. Bijoux du Monde translates as “Jewels of the World,” meaning that insects are jewels of the world and my work is homage to them.
I have always been keenly interested in challenging conceptions of beauty by juxtaposing what is perceived as beautiful and what is perceived as ugly or unpleasant. My art explores this concept.
My jewellery raises the status of the insect from bothersome pest to object of reverence, taking something ubiquitous pest largely ignored and creating something to be cherished and enjoyed.
Biography
At an early age I developed an appreciation for the natural world. Based on
this interest I studied biology including entomology, at Simon Fraser University.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science I began embedding insects I had
collected in university in resin. My father has been perfecting resin casting
techniques for the past thirty years and taught me how to work with the versatile
material. I took private silver smithing classes and immediately loved the
combination of the two media and saw its limitless potential. I now combine
this knowledge and creativity to create my singular line of insect jewellery.
