Janna Hurtzig
Vinyl Market Tote

Biography
Born in Ontario, Janna Hurtzig moved to the West Coast in 1994. Living in Vancouver, she continued to make things for herself and others. In 1998, she found herself needing a bag. Not finding what she wanted on the market, she decided to try making one for herself.

Completely self taught, she has been hand crafting her creations first at home, moving in Spring 2005, to her studio in Vancouver's Eastside. Materials used include Naugahyde vinyl, nylon, and retro fabric remnants. Citing the natural world as her inspiration, she tells a story of nature through the sugar glazed eyes of a child.
Her designs combine art and utility, with a stunning colour palette.

"I combine colours to create moods, so the story goes a bit deeper. I enjoy repetition of shape and form in my work, and feel that simpler images can have more impact than highly detailed ones."

A banana plant silouette becomes a modern form when shown in aqua and teal, a songbird sings a sweeter tune in hot yellow on the palest blue, and cloud shapes become a print when pink and burgundy combine.
A modern esthetic uniting Scandinavian designs, an Asian influence and a Canadian 'cottage' feel flavour her creations, giving a distinctive style to even the smallest of items.

Styles available include purses and wallets, laptop and diaper bags, as well as one of a kind items in recycled wool and cashmere.

Sold in Canada and the US, her work has been featured in local press as well as Flare and Vancouver Fashion magazines, and has been used in numerous films and television programs.
